The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. CLS scholars gain critical language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security. These students join approximately 550 competitively selected American students at U.S. colleges and universities who received a CLS award in 2017.

To be named to the dean's list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.

Some 3,228 students were awarded degrees during the University of Vermont's 216th commencement ceremonies. James Fallows, national correspondent for "The Atlantic" and one of the country's leading journalists across more than three decades, delivered the address.

The UVM History Department inducted 16 undergraduate and 3 graduate students into the national Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society on April 10, 2017. Our chapter at the University of Vermont, Alpha Alpha Psi, was chartered in 1982. Undergraduate students who have completed at least fifteen credit hours in History courses at UVM with a 3.6 grade point average and an overall grade point average of 3.4 are eligible for membership. History M.A. graduate students are required to maintain a 3.75 grade point average in their graduate studies. Induction ceremonies are held annually in April.

Five UVM applicants have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year. The prestigious awards are yearlong fellowships which enable seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students to live abroad and represent the United States as a part of the world's largest intellectual and cultural exchange fellowship.

DAAD-RISE is a German Academic Exchange Service program that offers summer research internships in science and engineering. The program funds undergraduates to complete research at excellent universities and research institutions across Germany with an expert in their field.

The Amgen Scholars program provides participants the opportunity to spend a summer working full-time under the guidance of a researcher at one of 10 universities across the United States. The Amgen Foundation aims to promote science education, inspire future scientists and enhance patient care.

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) contribute significantly to UVM's teaching mission, carrying important and often complex teaching responsibilities. They merit recognition for their dedication and for the important contributions they make to the teaching of undergraduate students at UVM. The Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year Award recognizes annually the accomplishments of GTAs who have demonstrated unusual excellence and creativity in their teaching and commitment to student learning. Beginning in 2013, two awards are given each year, one for GTAs who have served as the primary instructor in a lecture based course, one for teaching assistants who have served as laboratory instructors. While only two GTAs are chosen to receive the Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year Award, the department and program nominees for the award are also recognized and honored.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a rare honor, and academics and employers recognize it as a mark of intellectual breadth and exceptional academic performance. UVM's chapter was chartered in 1848, making it the eleventh chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. It has a rich history in its own right, being the first chapter in the nation to elect women and African Americans to membership.

The Roberto Fabri Fialho Research award is provided to a graduate student at UVM pursing a Ph.D with active research in the areas of ecology, evolution, population genetics, or animal behavior. The goals of this award are to support the research of outstanding graduate students in the disciplines loved by Dr. Fialho and to keep his memory alive at UVM.

The Thomas J. Votta Scholarship is awarded to a UVM graduate student in the Grossman School of Business, the College of Engineering and Mathematics, or the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, who wishes to make a difference in solving environmental problems and using Environmental Best Practices to meet this goal.

The Rodney L. Parsons Anatomy and Neurobiology Award is given annually in honor of Rodney L. Parsons, Ph.D. who joined the University of Vermont in 1967, and has played a key role in the growth and evolution of the anatomy and neurobiology disciplines at UVM. It is awarded to a University of Vermont doctoral student from any graduate program who excels in both neuroscience research and teaching in any broadly defined anatomical science.

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences Dean's Student Leadership Group offers feedback and recommendations to the dean on issues and initiatives related to the student experience.

Some 2,329 students were awarded a variety of bachelor's degrees during the University of Vermont's 215th commencement ceremonies on May 22. Approximately 502 advanced degrees were awarded by the UVM Graduate College, and 106 took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees at ceremonies of the UVM College of Medicine.

Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society with a mission to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. To be inducted into the UVM chapter, undergraduate students must have 15 or more earned credit hours in history, with a minimum 3.6 grade point average in history (GPA) and a 3.4 or better GPA overall. Graduate students must have 15 or more earned credit hours with a minimum 3.75 GPA.

The College of Arts and Sciences presented departmental awards to seniors at the annual College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held on May 20, 2016, at Ira Allen Chapel.

The UVM Career Center has selected six 2016 Interns for the Common Good. The Internships for the Common Good Fund is a competitive award that helps students cover costs as they pursue an internship at a mission-based organization.
