Claire M. Lintilhac Memorial Award For Excellence In Asian Studies
Claire M. Lintilhac lived and worked in China for fifty years, often as a midwife in remote areas of rural China. She spent the last several decades of her life in Stowe, Vermont, and her gifts have long supported scholarship of Asia at UVM, primarily through a lecture series that bears her name. This award is given to the outstanding seniors in Asian Studies based on their academic performance and commitment to the study of Asia.

The Robert D. Benedict Award for Best Essay in International Affairs
Founded in 1906, this award honors the legacy of Robert D. Benedict who graduated from UVM in 1848 and went on to become one of the most famous admiralty lawyers and judges of the 19th century. This prize was originally focused on the topic of International Arbitration, but in 1967 with Benedict's permission, it was amended to be on the topic of best essay on international affairs.

Paul D. Evans Award for Excellence in History
The History Department annually recognizes its outstanding graduating senior history major with the strongest academic record (as measured by overall grade point average and grade point average in History courses) with the Paul D.Evans Award for Excellence in History. Paul D. Evans had a distinguished career as a professor of history from the 1930s until his retirement in 1972. Consideration is also given to the level of difficulty of the courses taken within the major and preference accorded to those students doing a senior honors thesis in history.

Goran Prize in American History
The History Department annually recognizes an outstanding junior or senior major working in the field of American history. Candidates for the prize are nominated by faculty on the basis of academic achievement and all nominees are required to submit a major piece of academic writing in being considered for the award. Intended to honor the academic achievements of a student who hopes to pursue a career in history or the public humanities, the Goran Prize in American History was established in 2014 by UVM alumnus Arnie Goran '54 and his wife Mariel.

Victoria King Receives Lyman Rowell Award for Academic Achievement
Victoria King won the Lyman Rowell Award for Academic Achievement in Music at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. The award is given to the graduating senior in music or music education with the highest G.P.A. in music courses. It is named for Lyman S. Rowell (1904-1984), class of 1925, who was a long-time faculty member and President of UVM from1966-1970.

Helen Driesen Receives Pappoutsakis Award
Helen Driesen won the Pappoutsakis Award from the UVM Department of Music at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. The Pappoutsakis Award is given to a graduating senior that has shown excellence in conducting/directing. The award is named for Prof. Emeritus Ippocrates Pappoutsakis (1909-1990) who published "Diagrams of Basic Movements in Conducting" in 1943.

Emily Holt Receives Rodney Parsons Award
Emily Holt won the Rodney Parsons Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award is given annually to graduating senior neuroscience majors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership, and research in the field of neuroscience. The award is named for Rodney Parsons, who joined the UVM faculty in 1967, and served as Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology from 1979-2013, and since 2001 has served as the Director of the UVM Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Neuroscience. In addition to maintaining an outstanding research program, Dr. Parsons played an integral leadership role in developing and promoting neuroscience research and education at UVM.

Izabella Ostrowski Receives the Bruce S. Kapp Award
Izabella Ostrowski won the Bruce S. Kapp Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award is given annually to graduating seniors in neuroscience who have conducted outstanding independent research in neuroscience while maintaining high scholastic standards overall. The award is named for Bruce Kapp, who was a Professor of Psychology from 1971-2001. In addition to playing an integral role in promoting excellence in neuroscience research and scholarship at UVM, Dr.Kapp was a pioneer in the study of the neurobiology of emotion, and his work has dramatically influenced and directed the research of subsequent scientists in the field. Dr. Kapp was also a champion for involving undergrads in research and publishing with undergraduate students as co-authors on scientific journal articles.

Jiangyong Yu won the David W. Juenker Physics Prize at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. David W. Juenker was a well-known and skillful experimental physicist and professor. In honor of Professor Juenker, the faculty of the Department of Physics give this award to a senior physics major for outstanding scholarship in physics. The award carries a prize and a physics reference handbook.

Katrina E. Czar won the Albert D. Crowell Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. Albert D. Crowell was a professor and department chair in physics. In honor of ProfessorCrowell, the faculty of the Department of Physics give this award to a senior physics major for outstanding undergraduate experimental research in physics, as demonstrated through a research or laboratory project. The award carries a prize and a physics reference handbook.

Kaitlin Clark Receives Warren R. and Mildred Austin Prize
Kaitlin Clark won the Warren R. and Mildred Austin Prize For International Peace and Security at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. Warren R. Austin (UVM class of 1899) won a special election to the U.S. Senate from Vermont in 1931 and was subsequently re-elected to two full terms. He resigned his seat in August 1946 when he was appointed by President Truman as the second United States Ambassador to the United Nations, serving in that capacity from 1946 to 1953. This prize, established by the generous bequest of Warren and Mildred Austin, is given to the graduating senior who excels in the study of international relations, as chosen by the international relations faculty of the department.

Gillian Tiley Receives Philo Sherman Bennett Prize and Department Prize In Political Theory
Gillian Tiley won the Philo Sherman Bennett Prize and the Department Prize In Political Theory at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. Philo Sherman Bennett's 1905 will bequeathed $10,000 to be distributed to 25 colleges for the establishment of a prize for "the best essay discussing the principles of free government." Bennett prizes are awarded at, among other institutions, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Brown, the University of Oregon, the University of California at Berkeley, and Bowdoin. The prize is awarded by the department's political theory faculty to the student who submits the best essay in the field of political theory to the competition. The Department Prize In Political Theory, selected by the political theory faculty of the department, is given to the graduating senior political science major who excels in his or her coursework in, research about, and commitment to the study of political theory.

Emily Klofft Receives Elliott A. Brown Award
Emily Klofft won the Elliott A. Brown Award for the Outstanding Senior in Political Science at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award was established through a generous endowment by Elliott A. Brown, who majored in Political Science in the department and graduated from UVM in 1959. It was established in memory of his parents, Marguerite (Peg) F. Brown and Louis E. Brown. It is given annually by the department's director of undergraduate studies, in consultation with the faculty, to recognize the outstanding graduating senior major in the department for academic achievement and demonstrated leadership capabilities in the study and practice of political science.

Eric Tucker Receives Frank M. Bryan Prize In American Politics
Eric Tucker won the Frank M. Bryan Prize In American Politics at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award, selected by the American political science faculty of the department, is given to the graduating senior political science major who excels in his or her coursework in, research about, and commitment to the study of American politics. It is named in honor of Prof. Frank M. Bryan, who retired from the department after 36 years of loyal service to the department, the University, and the state of Vermont. It is supported by the contributions of a number of Prof. Bryan's friends and colleagues.

May Albee Receives George W. Albee Award
May Albee won the George W. Albee Award in psychological sciences at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. The award is given annually by the Board of Trustees of the Vermont Conference on the Primary Prevention of Psychopathology to a senior psychology major who has demonstrated exemplary interest, competence, and originality in subject matter and course work related to the topicof prevention of psychopathology. The award is named for George W. Albee, Professor of Psychology at UVM from 1971 to 1992. A former president of the American Psychological Association and internationally known scholar, Albee was among the most notable pioneers of the primary prevention movement in Psychology around the world.

Danielle Rice Receives the Heinz L. Ansbacher Award
Danielle Rice won the Heinz L. Ansbacher Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. The award is given annually to a senior psychology major who has conducted outstanding research or scholarship with a humanistic element in the tradition of individual psychology. This award is named for Heinz L. Ansbacher, Professor of Psychology at UVM from 1946-1963. Ansbacher is considered among the leading early followers of the Adlerian school of thought. In collaboration with his wife, Rowena Ansbacher, their major contribution, The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler (1954), is still the definitive text on individual psychology and remains in print today.

Jessica Liner Receives Donald G. Forgays Award
Jessica Liner won the Donald G. Forgays Outstanding Senior Award in the psychological sciences at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. The award is given annually to a senior psychology major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship in all courses in Arts and Sciences as well as achievement in independent research and scholarship. This awardee has among the highest GPAs of psychology majors and has completed notable scholarly projects in or out of the classroom. The award is named forDonald G. Forgays, who was Professor of Psychology at UVM from 1964 until his death in 1993. Dr. Forgays guided the expansion of the department and the establishment of its doctoral program, which is now internationally known.

Rebecca Wittlin Receives John Dewey Award
Rebecca Wittlin won the John Dewey Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award is given annually to a senior who has conducted outstanding independent research in psychology while maintaining high scholastic standards overall. This award is named for John Dewey, an 1879 alumnus of UVM who pursued a career in education, philosophy, and psychology, and was a noted educator and philosopher. Often known as "the father of progressive education," a movement that flourished in the early twentieth century and continues to influence modern educators, Dewey believed that experience was the best way for students to learn how to create the conditions for democracy, solve social problems, and engage in moral decision-making.
