The University of Vermont

Neville Caulfield received three academic awards in studio art and English at the University of Vermont this semester. He received the Outstanding Senior in Studio Art Award presented annually to the senior studio art major who demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to creative and artistic work. Caulfield also received the Jennifer Goldstein Memorial Prize, an award named for a talented third-year art student at UVM who tragically died in the spring of 1998. She had clear intentions of pursuing a career in art and the abilities to do so successfully. In her memory, 221 donors, led by family and close friends, created a fund that underwrites one Goldstein Prize, in perpetuity. The award is given to one graduating UVM studio art or art education major or a minor to further their creative development. In English, Caulfield won the Samuel N. Bogorad Award, given in memory of English professor Samuel Bogorad who taught from 1946 to 1982. The award is presented to one outstanding senior majoring in English.

Erin Bundock received two honors in the arts at the University of Vermont this semester. She was named Outstanding Senior in Studio Art, an award given to a senior studio art major demonstrating academic excellence and commitment to their creative and artistic work. Bundock also received the Paul Aschenbach Prize, presented annually to a UVM senior in recognition of her/his outstanding artwork. The prize is given through the generosity of John Wittenberg, UVM studio art alumnus in honor of his mentor, Paul Aschenbach, respected artist, teacher and former faculty member at UVM.

Abby Postlewaite received the David W. Juenker Physics Prize at the University of Vermont this semester. The prize was named for David W. Juenker, a well-known and skillful experimental physicist and professor. In honor of Professor Juenker, the faculty of the department of physics give this award to a senior physics major for outstanding scholarship in physics.

Audrey Oliver received the Frank M. Bryan Prize in American Politics this semester at the University of Vermont. This award, selected by the American politics faculty of the UVM department, is given to the graduating senior political science major who excels in his or her coursework in, research about, and commitment to the study of American politics. It is named in honor of Prof. Frank M. Bryan, who retired from the department after 36 years of loyal service to the department, the University, and the state of Vermont. It is supported by the contributions of a number of Prof. Bryan's friends and colleagues.

Ali Leah Burdick received the George W. Albee Award in psycholgical sciences at the Univeristy of Vermont this semester. This award is given annually by the Board of Trustees of the Vermont Conference on the Primary Prevention of Psychopathology to a senior psychology major who has demonstrated exemplary interest, competence, and originality in subject matter and course work related to the topic of prevention of psychopathology. The award is named for George W. Albee, who was professor of psychology at UVM from 1971 to 1992. A former President of the American Psychological Association and internationally known scholar, Albee was among the most notable pioneers of the primary prevention movement in psychology around the world.

Brianne Smith received the Departmental Prize in Comparative Politics at the University of Vermont this semester. Comparative politics is the study of the domestic political systems and processes of countries other than the United States. This award, selected by the comparative politics faculty of the department, is given to the graduating senior political science major who excels in their coursework in, research about, and commitment to the study of comparative politics.

Megan R. Fariel was named Outstanding Senior in Sociology at the University of Vermont this semester. This annual award is given to the graduating senior whose outstanding academic work has both reflected and perpetuated the sociological enterprise inside the classroom and beyond.

Isabel Lardner received the Mariafranca Morselli Prize for Outstanding Senior in Italian at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given annually to the senior who has demonstrated outstanding performance in Italian.

Jacob Potts received the Federico Garcia Lorca Prize for Outstanding Senior in Spanish at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given annually to the senior who has demonstrated outstanding performance in Spanish.

Connor Osterhoudt received the Heinz L. Ansbacher Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given annually to a senior psychology major who has conducted outstanding research or scholarship with a humanistic element in the tradition of individual psychology. This award is named for Heinz L. Ansbacher, who was professor of psychology at UVM from 1946-1963. Ansbacher is considered among the leading early followers of the Adlerian school of thought. In collaboration with his wife, Rowena Ansbacher, their major contribution, The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler (1954), is still the definitive text on Individual psychology and remains in print today.

Audrey Wilbur received the Miriam Zadek Award For Excellence in Costume Design and Costume Construction at the University of Vermont this semester. The award created to honor both the senior student who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of costume research, design and construction, and the woman for whom the award is named. Born the only hearing child in a family of three sisters and familiar with overcoming obstacles to positive communication, Miriam Zadek defied the limitations of the social roles of the times and went on to receive her master of arts in social work in 1952.

Adam N. Petrucci won the Christopher W. Allen Award at the University of Vermont this semester. This award is presented to a senior chemistry major for outstanding achievements in chemistry. Professor Allen was active in the UVM chemistry department for many years and made critical contributions to student education and research, and to faculty development.

Adam N. Petrucci won the Excellence In Chemical Research Award at the University of Vermont this semester. This award is presented annually to a senior chemistry major for outstanding efforts and achievements in chemical research. Research has always been a strong component of the undergraduate curriculum in the UVM chemistry department. Awardees distinguish themselves by their knowledge and creativity in the laboratory, in addition to their time and effort. Wins UVM Excellence in Physical Chemistry Award

Allison Jodoin won the Frederick Arnold Vinton Prize at the University of Vermont this semester. The Frederick Arnold Vinton Prize was established in 1951 by Hope Vinton in honor of her father, a medical doctor. It is awarded to "the student or students, male or female, who shall exhibit, in the opinion of the majority of the professors and instructors in Latin and Greek, exceptional proficiency in the study of said languages."

Daniel Combs received the Outstanding Senior In Computer Science Award this semester at the University of Vermont. The award is annually given to the top senior computer science major based on their academic performance and commitment to the field of computer science.

Mickenzie Zadworny received the Outstanding Senior In Dance Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given to a graduating senior who has made an outstanding contribution to dance at UVM.

Nicholas Ridder received the John H. Converse Award at the University of Vermont this semester. This award is presented annually to a senior economics student for outstanding academic achievement. It is named in honor of John H. Converse, a former trustee of the University who was instrumental in establishing coursework in economics at UVM in 1899.

Juliana Landis received the Freeman Saltus Award in economics from the University of Vermont this semester. This award recognizes seniors in the economics department who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. It was established in 1950 as a bequest from Freeman M. Saltus.

Brianne Smith received the Philipp H. Lohman Award in economics this semester at the University of Vermont. This award for an outstanding economics major is named for Professor Philipp Lohman, who served as professor and chair of the Economics Department from 1945-1963.

Benjamin Recchia won the George M. Happ Award at the University of Vermont. This award is presented to a student with outstanding academic performance and excellence in research in biology. Dr. Happ arrived at the University of Vermont as a professor and chair of the zoology in 1978. He was instrumental in transforming the faculty to a teacher-scholar model and prioritized obtaining funding to stimulate research. His research interest focused on the physiology and immunology of dogs, and has collaborated with the University of Alaska on prions in moose and caribou and avian disease.

Emily MacDonald won the Bernd Heinrich Award at the University of Vermont this semester. This award is presented annually to a student with outstanding academic performance and excellence in research in biology. Dr. Heinrich, Emeritus Professor of Biology, has been a member of the UVM biology department since 1980. He has had a long career in science in ecological physiology, animal behavior, and evolutionary ecology. Dr. Heinrich has produced hundreds of publications in the best journals and is often regarded as one of the world's foremost ecologists and naturalists.

Kate J. Ziegler received the Joan M. Herbers Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is presented annually to a student who has demonstrated excellence in biological research. The award is named for Joan Herbers who arrived at UVM in 1979 as the first tenure-track female professor in the history of the biology department and quickly rose to full professor, the highest rank for a faculty member. Dr. Herbers has been for many years one of the world's most important researchers in animal behavior, especially the social behavior of ants.

Jessica R. Crooker won the George Perkins Marsh Award at the University of Vermont's graduation ceremony May 17. This award is presented to a student with the highest academic performance in biology. Marsh was one of the great figures in Vermont and U.S. history. He is regarded as the founder of the environmental movement with his 1864 publication of Man and Nature, which is still in print. The book influenced many important scientific and political figures, including Theodore Roosevelt.

Ana Sleeman was named Outstanding Senior in Art History at the University of Vermont Graduation Ceremony on May 17. This award is given to a senior art history major for academic excellence and commitment to the field of art history.

Kia Rae Hanron won the annual Outstanding Senior in Art Education Award presented by the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Vermont's May 17 graduation. This award is given to a senior art education major for academic excellence and commitment to their creative and artistic work.

Sophia Webb won the annual Peter Seybolt Award at the University of Vermont's graduation ceremony on May 17. This award was initiated after the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures was founded in 2007 and was named for the founder of the department, Professor Peter Seybolt, to commemorate his dedication and contribution to Asian language education. It is given to the top graduating senior who majors in an Asian language based on their academic performances.

Kailey R. Loughran won the James B. Peterson Archeology Award in the UVM anthropology department on May 17. This award is named for Dr. James B. Petersen, a UVM graduate who later returned as a faculty member and chair of the Department of Anthropology. His work led to substantial intellectual contributions to the archaeology of the Northeast, the Caribbean, and Amazonia. The Petersen Award is presented to the graduating senior with a sub-disciplinary focus on archaeology, who best exemplifies Jim Peterson's passion for archaeology.

Charlotte Evans, a neuroscience major from Essex, Vt., was named co-winner of the University of Vermont Hannah Howard Prize on May 17. The Hannah Howard Prize is awarded to an undergraduate senior who has achieved the highest grade point average in the College of Arts and Sciences while enrolled on a full-time basis. The Prize was willed to the University of Vermont by Hannah V. Howard for scholarship attainments, good standing, and deportment. Evans also graduated with minors in global studies and chemistry. Evans is planning on a medical career.

Dina Alter, a neuroscience major from West Windsor, N.J., was named co-winner of the 2020 The Hannah Howard Prize at the University of Vermont on May 17. The prize is awarded is awarded to the undergraduate senior with the highest grade point average in the college while enrolled on a full-time basis. The Hannah Howard Prize was willed to the University of Vermont by Hannah V. Howard for scholarship attainments, good standing, and deportment. Alter plans to attend medical school.

Jiangyong Yu won the Outstanding Minor in Music Award at UVM's College of Arts and Sciences Awards Ceremony held May 17. This award is given to a graduating senior who has high academic achievement and has made an outstanding contribution to music at UVM.
