Kaleigh Calvao Wins Global Studies Prize at UVM
Kaleigh Calvao received the Robert D. Benedict Prize this semester at the University of Vermont. Founded in 1906, the award honors the legacy of Robert D. Benedict who graduated from UVM in 1848 and went on to become one of the most famous admiralty lawyers and judges of the 19th century. In 1904 he delivered UVM's commencement address, in which he argued his support for the Japanese in the RussoJapanese War of 1904-1905. This prize was originally focused on the topic of International Arbitration, but in 1967 with Benedict's permission it was amended to be on the topic of best essay on international affairs.

Caleb Chew '20 received the Willard B. Pope Award for Distinction in the Study of Shakespeare at the University of Vermont this semester. Sunny Nagpaul Wins UVM English Department Award
Sunny Nagpaul '20 received the Benjamin B. Wainwright Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The annual award is named for Professor Benjamin Wainwright who taught at UVM from 1925 to 1963. This prize is given to the student who submits the best poem each year.

Azilee Curl Wins UVM Neuroscience Award
Azilee J. Curl received the Bruce S. Kapp Award this semester at the University of Vermont. This award is given annually to a graduating senior in neuroscience who has conducted outstanding independent research in neuroscience, while maintaining high scholastic standards overall. The award is named for Bruce Kapp, who was a professor of psychology from 1971-2001. In addition to playing an integral role in promoting excellence in neuroscience research and scholarship at UVM, Dr. Kapp was a pioneer in the study of the neurobiology of emotion, and his work has dramatically influenced and directed the research of subsequent scientists in the field. Dr. Kapp was also a champion for involving undergrads in research and publishing with undergraduate students as co-authors on scientific journal articles.

Lauren Woodard Wins Psychological Science Award at UVM
Lauren Woodard received the Donald G. Forgays Outstanding Senior Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given annually to a senior psychology major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship in all courses in the College of Arts & Sciences as well as achievement in independent research and scholarship. This awardee has among the highest GPAs of psychology majors and has completed notable scholarly projects in or out of the classroom. The award is named for Donald G. Forgays, who was professor of psychology at UVM from 1964 until his death in 1993. Forgays guided the expansion of the department and the establishment of its now internationally- known doctoral program.

Van Vlaanderen, who graduated with a B.A. in health and society and minors in statistics and economics, will pursue a masters in public health at Columbia University, with the ultimate goal of contributing to research on the social context of health disparities.

Landon Williamson Wins Geology Award at UVM
Landon D. Williamson received the Charles Doll Award this semester at the University of Vermont. The award is presented to the outstanding graduating senior(s) in geology. Charles Doll was the state geologist and began teaching full time at UVM in 1927. He was chairman of the department of geology from 1946 until his retirement in 1964. He also produced the first state bedrock geologic map. The selection criteria for the Doll Award are based on a combination of overall grade point average, grade point average in geology, undergraduate research, and service to the department. The recipient of this award receives a gift and their name is engraved on a plaque that hangs in the UVM department seminar room.

Lucia Possehl Wins UVM Geography Award
Lucia Possehl, a geography major with minors in history and environmental studies, received the Glen Elder Award this semester at the University of Vermont. Glen Elder was a beloved geography professor, department chair, and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences who died suddenly in 2009. The Glen Elder Award is made every year to a top geography senior whose work on issues of social justice, sexuality, South Africa, or political geography has embodied the spirit of Elder's commitment and interests.

Daniel Ortiz Wins History Honor at UVM
Daniel A. Ortiz received the Paul D. Evans Award at the University of Vermont this semester. The UVM history department annually recognizes its outstanding graduating senior history major(s) with the strongest academic record (as measured by overall grade point average and grade point average in history courses) with the Paul D. Evans Award for Excellence in History. Paul D. Evans had a distinguished career as a professor of history from the 1930s until his retirement in 1972. Consideration is also given to the level of difficulty of the courses taken within the major and preference accorded to those students doing a senior honors thesis in history.

Jason Goldfarb Wins History and Political Science Awards at UVM
Jason M. Goldfarb received two academic awards at the University of Vermont this semester. He won the Elliott A. Brown Award for the Outstanding Senior in Political Science, and the Goran Prize in American History. The Goran Prize annually recognizes an outstanding junior or senior major working in the field of American history. Candidates for the prize are nominated by faculty on the basis of academic achievement and all nominees are required to submit a major piece of academic writing in being considered for the award.

Jake Landry received the Lyman Rowell Award for Academic Achievement in Music from the University of Vermont this semester. The award is given annually to the graduating senior in music or music education with the highest G.P.A. in music courses. It is named for Lyman S. Rowell (1904-1984), Class of 1925, who was a long-time faculty member and president of UVM from 1966-1970.

Local Graduate Shares UVM John Dewey Prize
Griffin McNamee '20 and Makayla Salas '20 shared the John Dewey Prize for Outstanding Philosophy Major at the University of Vermont this semester. The prize, named in honor of UVM's most illustrious alumnus, is awarded by the department of philosophy to students who demonstrate outstanding undergraduate coursework and research in philosophy.
